The name comes from ‘Amstel dam’, a dam on the river Amstel. From a small fishing village in the 12th century, Amsterdam grew as one of the most important ports in the world by the 18th century and became a major center for finance and diamonds. That was the golden age in the history of the city and the Dutch Golden Age. Now it is the financial and cultural capital of the Netherlands. Many large Dutch companies have their headquarters there. Many top companies in the world like Philips and ING are headquartered there.
